Tamale Senior High School is a coeducational second cycle boarding school situated in Education Ridge, a neighborhood of the Sagnarigu Municipality. It was formerly known as Government Secondary School, Tamale, Gbewaa Secondary School, and most recently Tamale Secondary School. The school was established in 1951 as the Northern Territories’ first second-cycle institution by the British Colonial Authorities in charge at the time.
The school is a selective institution that admits students based on their performance on the Basic Education Certificate Examination for students in Ghana and on a specific entrance exam that the school administers for those outside of Ghana. The school offers courses in business, home economics, general science, technical, general arts, and visual arts.
Tamale Senior High School’s long history—which predates Ghana’s independence—as well as its illustrious alumni list make it one of the most prestigious institutions in Ghana. A head of state, two vice presidents of Ghana’s fourth republic, a speaker of parliament, two justices of the Supreme Court of Ghana, two chiefs of staff for the armed forces, and numerous cabinet members and parliamentarians are among the alumni of the school.
VISION
To be a provider of quality education to its students
so that they can acquire the requisite qualifications for
further training in tertiary institutions and become
responsible and productive citizens ready to assume
leadership roles in the country.
MISSION
The mission of the school is to recruit and maintain
qualified, competent and devoted staff and admit
BECE leavers who have attained the requisite
qualification and ensure quality education delivery
with the view to achieving academic excellence, high
level of discipline, good morals, excellence in sports
and games.
History
In 1951, Tamale Senior High School was established as Government Secondary School, Tamale, by the British Colonial Administration. The Tamale Senior Boys School, an existing middle school, served as the model for the new school. Under the British Colonial Administration at the time, the school went on to become the first secondary school in the Northern Territories.Among other things, the institution’s primary goal was to lessen the growing disparity in human resource capacity between the former British Colony’s north and south. The institution has undergone several name changes in its history. The school’s name was changed to Gbewaa Secondary School in 1972.Tamale Secondary School and, most recently, Tamale Senior High School were the subsequent namesakes.
